VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY  ~  9TH ANNUAL TALL SHIPS TOUR

OCTOBER 2004 THRU FEBRUARY 2005

In 1996 the Tall Ships, HAWAIIAN CHIEFTAIN & LADY WASHINGTON set sail from the San Francisco Bay on a mission to bring history alive for Californian school kids. The VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY 4th & 5th grade sailing & dockside education programs give present day students an insight into the lives of 18th century sailors and explorers. To date, over 100,000 participants have enjoyed that hands-on experience.

The ships are replicas of 1700’s period vessels and will visit 15 ports on the six month long, ninth annual TALL SHIPS TOUR which began in Sausalito on October 24th, 2004.

People of all ages can indulge in a taste of maritime history on Dockside Tours of the ships guided by the enthusiastic costumed crews. Interactive Adventure Sail Training and Cannon Battle Reenactment Sails are available in each port and berths can also be booked on Port to Port Passages.

A highlight of the Tour is the LONG BEACH SEA FESTIVAL scheduled for January 8 & 9, 2005.  The impressive list of participating vessels includes HAWAIIAN CHIEFTAIN, LADY WASHINGTON, CALIFORNIAN, LYNX, SPIRIT OF DANA POINT & SWIFT OF IPSWICH.  The Festival will feature Dockside Tours of all the ships and Cannon Battle Reenactment Sails.

At the Festival close, there is a unique opportunity for passengers to sail aboard the ships on a TALL SHIPS RACE.  The race course is from Long Beach to San Diego and finishes with a spectacular TALL SHIPS PARADE into the San Diego Maritime Museum on January 12.

ow we're often popping up with music news on this page but here's some interesting book news ~ first of all, may we introduce one worthy author, Alex Epstein:

This picture was shamelessly swiped from Alex Epstein's website, despite that - all his rights are reserved!

His book is "Crafty Screenwriting ~ Writing Movies that Get Made"

Last night while finishing a late meal at the Crown & Anchor in Las Vegas I found myself chatting with another young author whose name is Ed Miller ... about to publish "Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big with Expert Play" ... look out for this title towards the end of summer, I thoroughly enjoyed a wide-ranging conversation with the eclectic Mr Ed.

o this is somewhat late to start the 2004 entries I know, but life has a way of interfering with fun.  Those curved balls just keep coming at you sometimes.  Its not as if there's been no news, just some extremely depressing news on a continual basis.

We have set up a new Audio Books* page with four publications by One Voice Recordings and our Games Pages are being re-worked as we add a shopping cart with a Decklin's Demo CD, and DEMISE: Rise of the Ku'Tan in various forms from our PC Role Playing Games front page. (link edited 8/8/2005)

For those of you who wish to wander down memory lane ;)

Notes on the media links.  The BBC news is linked as it remains one of the few remaining balanced sources of world news followed closely by the CBC , the Canadian television and radio agency.  We admit there is a west coast bias to the newspaper links as we are located in the San Francisco Bay Area.  It is not our intention to expand the list indefinitely, but if you have a source of balanced information anywhere in the world that you think deserves a spot here, then please feel free to email (address is at the bottom of the page).

A potted history of BBC news ~ The BBC was founded in 1922 as the British Broadcasting Company by a consortium of private companies and then in 1927 it was changed to be an autonomous corporation run by a board of governors with four year terms appointed by the government of the day.  It ran the World's first regular high definition TV service from Alexandra Palace in 1936 but service was suspended during World War II.  As it is financed by sales of television licenses as well as income from sales of its vast stock of programming it remains essentially free of advertising and the censorship that goes along with that.  The BBC news  is regarded by many as one of the few broadcast sources with balanced reporting.  If you wish to learn more of the history of this institution or indeed just about any other subject under the Sun ~ visit Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
