Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's final farewell to his hero was published in 1927, and shows a youthful eagerness for experiment. "Mazarin Stone" is told in the third person as was "His Last Bow", though this time the entire A Team is present, even including Mrs Hudson and Billy. Is this in effect a curtain call? Holmes himself finally puts pen to paper on his own account in "Blanched Soldier" because Watson "has deserted me for a wife", and in "Lion's Mane" because he is now retired to a villa on the Sussex Downs.
