Silas Marner
A classic Victorian novel of manners set in the English countryside, Silas
Marner tells the story of the title character who was driven from his home and
excommunicated from his church by a false accusation against his morality.
Marner lives for fifteen years without any connection to other people or to God,
living only to earn money which he secretly hoards in his home. When this money
is stolen from him, he feels bereft of a reason to live until a young orphan
comes into his life and gives it meaning again, bringing him back into the fold
of community.
